Donald R. Hallbauer Sr. Donald Roy Hallbauer Sr. of Prescott, KS, formerly of Neodesha, KS, died Saturday, January 24, 2009, at St. Johns Regional Medical Center in Joplin, MO. He was 84. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 29, 2009, at Penwell-Gabel Loran Fawcett Chapel in Neodesha. The Reverend Dave Cheshier will officiate. Interment will be in Star Cemetery. Mr. Hallbauer will lie in state Wednesday from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. The son of Morris F. and Leota Castella Lininger Hallbauer, he was born January 20, 1925, in Kansas City, MO. On April 6, 1946, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Elizabeth Elliott in Neodesha, KS. The couple moved from Neodesha to Pleasanton, KS, in 1978. Mrs. Hallbauer preceded him in death July 25, 2008. He had been a resident of the Prescott Countryview Home in Prescott, KS. Mr. Hallbauer joined the US Army in 1943 and served in the European Theater where he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in action. He was employed by Kansas Power and Light for a number of years before retiring in 1990. Don was a lifetime member of VFW Post 5962 and was a 50-year member of the Carpenters Union. Survivors include one son, Donald R. Hallbauer Jr. of Birmingham, AL; one sister, Erma Jean Johnson of Texas; three grandsons; and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Edward, Pete, Delbert, Loren Albert and Alfred; and one sister, Juanita Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to the W.A. Rankin Memorial Library in Neodesha and may be left at the funeral home.
