Frances Francie Nona Hansen Newland, 92, of Neodesha, KS, died Wednesday morning, October 6, 2010, at Via Christi Village in Pittsburg, KS She was born to Albert Henry Hansen and Anna Mayzell Morris on June 18, 1918, in Wilson County Kansas. She was the Valedictorian of her 1936 Vilas High School graduating Class in Vilas, KS. In 1976, after raising a family of eight children, Frances graduated Suma CumLaude from the Parsons School of Nursing, and worked as a Registered Nurse in the Neodesha Health System. She was employed by Wilson County Hospital and the North Nursing Home in Neodesha. Frances married Eldred Newland on July 19,1936, in Chanute, KS. He preceded her in death on November 22, 1995. Eldred and Frances owned the Newland Dairy in Neodesha for many years as well as the Newland Farm and Nursery. She was very active in local church, school and community activities. Frances was a member of the Saint Ignatius Catholic Church of Neodesha since 1947 and a member and a past president of the Alter Society. She was also a member and past president of the Neodesha Federated Music Club as well as a member of the Wilson Co. Hospital Auxiliary. Survivors include four sons: Albert Newland of Pittsburg, KS Eldred Newland, JR of Castle Rock, CO Joe Newland and John Newland of Neodesha, KS three daughters: Judith Hix of Pittsburg, KS Dolores Nangle and Jeanne Steele of Neodesha, KS 19 grandchildren and 25 greatgrandchildren with one expected in February of 2011. Mrs. Newland is also survived by one sister, Leona Wiltse, of Chanute, KS and one brother LCDR L.W. Hansen of Foley, AL. She is preceded in death, in addition to her husband, by a son James W. Newland and two brothers Charles Hansen and Benjamin Hansen. Mass of the Christian Burial will be recited at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 09, 2010, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church under the direction of PenwallGabel Loran Fawcett Chapel. Father Stephen Thapwa will officiate. Interment will be in the Neodesha Catholic Cemetery. Rosary will be recited Friday at 7:00 p.m. at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. Friends may call at PenwellGabel Loran Fawcett Chapel to register on Friday from 15 p.m. The family has suggested memorial contributions be made to St. Ignatius Building Fund and can be left at the funeral home.
