HAZEL LETOA DANNELS-YORK Hazel Letoa York, 99, of Altoona, Kansas passed away Sunday, July 11, 2004 at the Wilson County Hospital in Neodesha, Kansas. Hazel Letoa Dannels was born October 14, 1904 to Alva I. and Julia Ann Dannels near Altoona, Kansas. She moved with her parents to the Halter neighborhood in 1908 and continued to live in the same neighborhood until moving to Altoona in 1970. She attended grade school at the Halter school and graduated from high school in Altoona in 1923. On February 22, 1928, she was united in marriage to James B. York. They were engaged in farming and in 1944 bought their own farm southwest of Altoona. No children were born to this union. Hazel and her father continued to live on the farm after James died on October 19, 1965. When her father died in December of 1969, she moved into Altoona. Hazel was a member of the Altoona Methodist Church since 1921. Other organizations she participated in were the Altoona United Methodist Women, Just-A-Mere Club, the Extension Unit, and the Altoona Senior Citizens. She served as the Altoona City Treasurer for 20 years retiring in 1997. She also served on the Cedar Township Cemetery Board and the Senior Citizens Treasurer for several years. Surviving relatives are some cousins, nieces and nephews of her husband. Visitation hours for Hazel will be held on Wednesday, July 14, 2004 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Thursday, July 15, 2004 from 8:00 a.m. to noon at the Penwell-Gabel Loran Fawcett Chapel in Neodesha, Kansas. Funeral services for Hazel Letoa Dannels-York will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, July 15, 2004 at the Altoona United Methodist Church, Altoona, Kansas with Reverend Harry Disbrow, Pastor of the Altoona United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at the Altoona Cemetery. The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Altoona United Methodist Church.
