Nora Mae Smith Nora Mae Smith of Independence, Kansas, died Saturday morning, December 17, 2005, at Beverly Health and Rehab in Neodesha, Kansas. She was 88. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 20, 2005, at Penwell-Gabel Webb amp; Rodrick Chapel. Rev. Willie Jones will officiate. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon-8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. The daughter of Henry and Nora Lippy Catron, she was born November 10, 1917, in Luther, Oklahoma. As a child, she moved with her family to the area near Sycamore, Kansas, where she has resided since. She graduated from Neodesha High School. On September 26, 1940, she was united in marriage to Leo James Smith in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death July 20, 1999. She was employed as a clerk at the Montgomery County Courthouse and the Independence SRS office until her retirement. She was a member of the Sycamore United Methodist Church. Survivors include one son, Jim Smith of Independence, KS; and four grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Barbara Doherty; five brothers, Louis, George, Ray, Ralph and Austin; and three sisters, Marge, Esther and Ruth.
