William (Bill) Mcghee

William (Bill) Martin McGhee, 69, passed away October 10, 2020. He was born on October 6, 1951, in Highland Park, MI to Wallace Martin McGhee and Mary Elizabeth (Allen) McGhee. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church, Detroit, MI and volunteered his time to serve at the church. Bill graduated from Franklin High School, Livonia, MI on June 11, 1969 and briefly attended Schoolcraft College before joining the US Air Force in November 1970. Bill trained as a Flight Engineer and Aircraft Maintenance Specialist at the Community College of the Air Force at Lackland AFB, TX. During his time serving from November 1970 to December 1975 Bill earned the rank of E-5. Bill also received several commendations and medals for meritorious service. One of which he earned while serving a year at U-Tapao Airfield, Thailand. Airman McGhee willingly volunteered to work additional duty hours to ensure quality aircraft were available in minimum time for wing commitments. The distinctive accomplishments of Airman McGhee reflects’ credit upon himself and the United States Air Force. While serving in Thailand, Bill also learned Thai and volunteered his time teaching Thai children English. He served for 18 months in Vietnam as an aircraft mechanic assigned to the 307th Strategic Wing which flew B-52 Stratofortress bombing missions against Viet Cong targets. Airman McGhee was relieved of duty with an honorable discharge in December 1975 from Little Rock AFB, AR. After his time in the Air Force, he attended Ross Business Institute and earned a Financial Clerk Program Certificate. Bill enjoyed sports and especially loved following the Detroit Lions and the Tigers and when he moved to Kansas,he started following the Kansas City Chiefs. He also loved working on and riding motorcycles.

Bill is survived by his siblings, brother, Bob McGhee and wife Liane of Charlevoix, MI and sisters, Sue Thomas and husband Dwight of Redford, MI and Elaine Prosser of Neodesha, Ks; nieces and nephews, Kelly Johnson of Howell, MI, Chad Prosser and wife Suzannah of Waxhaw, NC, Jeremy Prosser and wife Jacqueline of Sevierville, TN, Deanna Henderson and husband Scott of Canton, MI, Brian White of Redford, MI, Heather Swan and husband Bryan of Canton, MI. He is preceded in death by his parents Wallace and Mary McGhee, his brother-in-law, DeWayne Prosser and his nephew-in-law Brent Johnson.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2020 at Bible Baptist Church, 1100 N. 4th Street, Neodesha, KS 66757 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Harold Stacy officiating. Online condolences can be left to the family by going to www.loranfawcettfuneralhome.com.
