Longtime Neodesha resident, Shirley Jo Mayhood, 89 passed away at Wilson Medical Center in Neodesha on Wednesday, December 14, 2022.

Shirley was welcomed into this world to Thomas and Sarah (Keenan) Herron in Asheville, North Carolina on June 4, 1933. Shirley attended and graduated from high school in Asheville, North Carolina. On September 2, 1951, Shirley married the love of her life Charles “Chuck” Mayhood in Asheville. In 1959, Shirley and Chuck moved to Neodesha and made their home. In 1972 the two started Little Bear Oil and Little Bear Transportation. Shirley owned and operated Little Bear for 36 years, finally retiring in 2008. After retirement, Shirley continued to do bookkeeping for various businesses until her passing.

Shirley, commonly known as “Mema” was a mother and grandmother to all that knew her. She was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan and huge supporter of the Neodesha Bluestreaks. Shirley loved to feed animals at the farm, but most of all she loved her duck “Lucky Duck”. Shirley will be remembered for her generosity, her kind heart and her motherly advice. Shirley was one you could always count on to lend a helping hand.

Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, Chuck. son Randy, daughter Jessica, grandson Josh, sister Audrey, brother Tommy.

Those left to carry on Shirley’s memory are her sons Steve, Gary and Rick Mayhood, sister Lynne Olin, sister Joy, brother Jimmy, grandchildren Alisa, Tommy, Jordan, Carly, Jill, Liz, Bryan, Brooke, Scott, Samantha, and Tracey along with 25 great grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Loran Fawcett Chapel with services to be held at a later date.
